Border Row: Regional Committees Announced to Resolve Dispute with Assam

SHILLONG: After the amicable settlement of the border row with Assam in the first phase, the Meghalaya government is gearing up to deal with the issue in the second phase. The government has notified three regional committees to study the dispute in 6 areas bordering Assam.

These areas are Block-l, Psiar-Khanduli in West Jaintia Hills , Langpih in West Khasi Hills ; Borduar, Nongwah- Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah, Block-ll in Ri-Bhoi.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong would head the regional committee to deal with the border issue with Assam in Ri Bhoi. Others in the committee are cabinet minister Dasakhiat Lamare, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, KHADC EM Jambor War, KHADC MDC Rangkynsai Kharbuki. Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner would be the convener of the committee.

According to a government notification, cabinet minister Renikton L.Tongkhar would take the lead in the regional committee set up to deal with the dispute in West Khasi Hills district. Other members include Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat, Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA Kimfa S. Marbaniang, KHADC Deputy CEM Gigur Myrthong, MDC Bajop Pyngrope and West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner.

Urban affairs minister Sniawbhalang Dhar would head the panel set up to study the dispute in West Jaintia Hills. Members include home minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Raliang MLA Comingone Ymbon, Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh, JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat and West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner.

The regional committees would have to establish the geographical location of the villages and their contiguity and examine the status of the population of villages as per census records, including ethnicity.

The committee members would visit each of the disputed border villages and would interact with the communities. These include the elected representatives of the Autonomous District Councils and other stakeholders to learn about the perception of the people living in the area.

The Committees would submit their reports to the Government within 45 days.
